RECAP: 2018 TRANSFORM FILM FEST

“We’re really doing this!”

In 2017, three women quietly came together and started what would be Transform Film Fest 2018. It was super easy to organize, we had unlimited funding, very pleasant internet interactions with total strangers, and we did so with no trolls on Instagram proclaiming “a women’s film festival is dumb” or flack from men in the industry. Twas a wonderful joy, the end.

But … it was more like we all came together loud, mad as hell, and thinking to ourselves - is this where we are at? With movements like #METOO at the forefront of Hollywood, crushing stats for women in the film industry dropping, and our own personal demons - we came together as three people wanting to see active response and positive change within our communities.

FAST FORWARD three to four months (literally, we know) working around the clock and TRANSFORM FILM FEST happened on February 10, 2018 in Austin, Texas. With much appreciated community collaboration, a couple dozen volunteers and some amazing partners (what up Hive Arts Collective, WCCTX, and MMAC) to pull it all together, an idea turned into a full fledged festival of a badass group of women’s (DAMN GOOD) short films. We went big on the awards, awarding over $8000 in prizes to five categories, all on one special night!

Our goals were simple yet grand in impact:

  1. Feature women filmmakers across the Texas landscape, transforming the way we view both films and their makers.

  2. Go beyond celebrating films by women and honor their work with a real film festival.

  3. Award meaningful prizes.

The first annual Transform Film Fest was held at Motion Media Arts Center on February 10 and it was one hell of a ride!

Transform Film Fest 2018 featured:

  • 18 short films

  • 4 industry professional judges

  • 261 attendees

  • 25 community volunteers

  • 3 Fest Producers

  • 10+ corporate & organizational sponsors
